{"id":34,"date":"2010-08-17T14:28:17","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T13:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/?page_id=34"},"modified":"2011-08-05T19:04:05","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:04:05","slug":"travel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/?page_id=34","title":{"rendered":"Location &#038; Arrival"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Advice for participants staying in the University Accommodation:<\/h2>\n<p>On arrival please first collect keys to your accommodation as explained below, and then go to the registration point to collect your conference pack and further information.<\/p>\n<p>ACCOMMODATION:<\/p>\n<p>The accommodation is at the University of Strathclyde Campus Village(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rescat.strath.ac.uk\/village_accom.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.rescat.strath.ac.uk\/village_accom.html<\/a>), which is in the city centre of Glasgow. The school is held on the same site. You will need to collect your keys from building 26 (near the Lord Todd restaurant) on the Campus Village Map. The address is:<\/p>\n<p>Village Office<br \/>\nWeaver Street<br \/>\nGlasgow<br \/>\nG4 0NP<\/p>\n<p>Bedrooms are available from 2pm onwards and rooms should be vacated by 10am on the\u00a0 day of departure.<\/p>\n<p>The reception desk is manned 24 hours a day, so there is no restriction as to when you must check in by. However if you expect to arrive late in the evening, please advise us of this. Once you have your keys you are free to come and go from the accommodation as you please. Access is 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>REGISTRATION:<\/p>\n<p>Registration is open from 3pm to 6pm at the level 4 entrance to the John Anderson building.<\/p>\n<h2>The University of Strathclyde<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The University of Strathclyde was founded through the will of John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, in 1796 as a &#8220;place of useful learning&#8221;. Today it has 15,000 undergraduate and 7000 post-graduate students. The <a title=\"Visitors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/visiting\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Anderson campus<\/a> is conveniently situated in the city centre and the accommodation for SUSSP68 is on-site beside the\u00a0lecture theatres in\u00a0the <a title=\"Physics Department\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phys.strath.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Physics Department<\/a> in the <a title=\"John Anderson Building\" href=\"http:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/maps\/johnandersonbuilding\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Anderson Building<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/campus_map1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-315\" title=\"University of Strathclyde Campus\" src=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/campus_map1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/campus_map.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Campus-map1.tif\"><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Glasgow city<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Squinty_Bridge_small1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50\" title=\"Glasgow1\" src=\"https:\/\/sussp68.phys.strath.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Squinty_Bridge_small1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Glasgow City Council\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glasgow.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow<\/a> is Scotland\u2019s largest city and the third largest in the UK with a population of 2.3 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travelling to Glasgow:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Air travel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A wide range of airline fly into Glasgow International Airport, including British Airways and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flyglobespan.com\/\">Flyglobespan<\/a>, which has many flights between Glasgow International Airport and Europe. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryanair.com\/\">Ryanair<\/a> operates flights from Prestwick International Airport, which is around 30 miles from the city centre. Many airlines fly into Edinburgh Airport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting into Glasgow from the airports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glasgowairport.com\/\">Glasgow International Airport<\/a>, it&#8217;s 15-20 minutes drive into the city &#8211; and there are regular airport buses.The journey will take approximately 20 minutes at a cost of \u00a34.50 (single). \u00a0Alternatively a taxi can be easily hired from the taxi rank located next to the bus stop. The journey time is similar, costing approximately \u00a325.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpia.co.uk\/\">Prestwick International Airport<\/a> is around 30 miles from the city centre and has its own train station with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buytickets.scotrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">trains<\/a> running to Glasgow Central Station every half hour and taking approximately 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edinburghairport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh airport<\/a>, there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flybybus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">bus link <\/a>to the railway stations in the City Centre. There are regular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buytickets.scotrail.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">trains<\/a> from Haymarket station to Glasgow. The total journey time from Edinburgh airport to Glasgow is approximately 1.5 hours (the train journey takes 45-50 minutes, with trains running every 15 minutes).\u00a0 The closest train stations to the University campus and SUSSP68 venue is the Queen&#8217;s Street station and High Street station<\/p>\n<div><a name=\"d.en.45120\"><\/a><strong>For trains<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>There are direct <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gner.co.uk\/\">GNER<\/a> rail links from Edinburgh Waverly and London King&#8217;s Cross to Glasgow Central Station. On some trains from London, you may need to change in Edinburgh. From London Euston station, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virgintrains.co.uk\/\">Virgin trains<\/a> and the First\u00a0Scotrail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstgroup.com\/scotrail\/content\/caledoniansleeper\/\">Caledonian Sleeper<\/a> travel direct to Glasgow. The direct journey from London to Glasgow takes around 4 to 5 hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>City travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Glasgow&#8217;s underground railway is fast and efficient. The nearest stop to the John Anderson Campus is Buchanan Street.
